The one set apart and equipped for a specific task. Oil was poured on kings, priests and prophets in the Old Testament — the anointing meant: this one is chosen, this one is sent. Jesus stands up in Nazareth and reads Isaiah — and then says: this is Me. I am the one sent.

To crucify. Stauroo. He was crucified in weakness but lives by the power of God. The cross looked like failure. It was the greatest victory in the history of the universe.

Jewish, belonging to Judah. Ioudaios. Salvation is from the Jews. God chose a people to bring the Messiah into the world. His choice of Israel was for the benefit of all nations.

Stumbling block, snare, trap. Skandalon. Jesus warned that offenses must come, but woe to the one through whom they come. Do not be the thing that trips another's faith.

Nation, people group, Gentile. Ethnos. Go and make disciples of all nations. Every people group on earth is included in God's redemptive plan. None are excluded.

Foolishness, absurdity. Mōría. The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those being saved it is the power of God. Do not mistake divine wisdom for what the world calls absurd.
