“For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.”

they were disciplining us,
To train, to discipline, to educate. Paideuo. The Lord disciplines those He loves. Discipline is evidence of love not absence of it. God trains those He has chosen for greatness.
