“But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?”

Desert, wilderness, solitary place. Eremos. He withdrew to a wilderness place and prayed. The wilderness is not punishment. It is often the training ground for the greatest seasons.
