“And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.”
σημεῖον
Sign, miracle, token, wonder. Semeion. Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe. Signs point beyond themselves. The miracle is never the main thing. It points to the One who does it.

A crowd, a multitude, a mob. He saw a great crowd and had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. His response to crowds was always compassion.
