“And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

In Greek thought, the logos was the rational principle holding the universe together. John opens his Gospel with this word — not as a concept, but as a person. In the beginning was the Word. Before anything existed, the Word already was.

Not a way among many ways. The way. In the ancient world, hodos meant a road that had been walked and proven. Jesus is not giving directions — He is saying: I am the road itself. Walk in Me and you will arrive.

Heart, inner self, the seat of life. Kardia. Create in me a pure heart O God. The heart is the control centre of life. What God changes in the heart changes everything else.

To burn, to set on fire. Kaio. Were not our hearts burning within us? The presence of Jesus ignites the heart. When He opens the Scriptures something catches fire inside.
