“And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.”
ἵστημι
To stand, to set, to place. Histemi. Having done all stand. Stand therefore. When you have done everything else there is still this. Stand in what Christ has already accomplished.

A crowd, a multitude, a mob. He saw a great crowd and had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. His response to crowds was always compassion.
