“For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;”

The one set apart and equipped for a specific task. Oil was poured on kings, priests and prophets in the Old Testament — the anointing meant: this one is chosen, this one is sent. Jesus stands up in Nazareth and reads Isaiah — and then says: this is Me. I am the one sent.

To forgive, to give freely, to grant. Charizomai. Forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you. The standard for our forgiveness of others is the standard of God's forgiveness of us.

To believe, to trust, to have faith. Pisteuo. Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved. Believing is more than intellectual agreement. It is a transfer of trust to Jesus.

To suffer, to experience. Pascho. He learned obedience through what He suffered. Suffering is not wasted in God's economy. It produces something that ease never can.

Only, alone, merely. Monon. Only believe. Faith is the one requirement. Not performance. Not achievement. Not worthiness. Just trust. That is all He asks.
