Life, soul, living being. Nephesh. The animating breath God places in every living creature. In animals it is the life force. In humanity it is the seat of emotion, will and identity. Every nephesh belongs to God — from the creatures in the sea to the deepest cry of the human heart.

Hope, expectation. Tiqvah. A cord stretched taut with expectation. The same word as the scarlet cord Rahab hung from her window. God gives you a cord to hold.

Silence, stillness. Dummiyyah. My soul waits in silence for God alone. Active waiting that has chosen to stop striving and trust completely.
