“And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.”

Not just a follower — a learner who becomes like the teacher. The last command Jesus gives is not go and convert — it is go and make mathetes. People who learn from Me, walk like Me, think like Me, love like Me. The mission is not decisions. It is transformation.

Not just financially poor — ptochos is the one who crouches, who has nothing to stand on. Blessed are those who know they have nothing in themselves before God. That emptiness is not a problem. It is the very space into which the kingdom enters.

Blessed, happy, to be envied. Makarios. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Makarios describes the state of those who are right with God. It is deeper than happiness. It is well-being of the soul.
