“And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.”

Pilate, Roman governor. Pilatos. He held the power to release or crucify, yet handed Jesus over to satisfy the crowd. Authority without courage is no authority at all.

To whip, to flog, to lash. Phragelloō. Pilate had Jesus flogged before handing him over to be crucified. The sinless one bore the lash meant for the guilty. Do not take lightly what he endured.
