“Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.”

Sign, miracle, token, wonder. Semeion. Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe. Signs point beyond themselves. The miracle is never the main thing. It points to the One who does it.
